Explain Forget the Wheat

Today, I am going to talk about wheat and why it is the food that people should not be eating. I would like to see people forget the wheat in their diet so that their health can be the best that it can be. I will try to explain in terms that are brief and not too technical as to why eating wheat is not healthy.

Let’s begin…

It has been noted for many years that there is a certain segment of the population who cannot tolerate eating wheat at all. They develop severe intestinal problems when they eat food containing wheat. These people eventually are diagnosed with Celiac disease.

Then, there is the rest of us who for all intents and purposes are healthy and eating wheat but slowly throughout the years develop symptoms that indicate that health is no longer optimum. Some of these symptoms may include, skin issues such as acne or psoriasis, arthritic pain, migraine headaches, depression, PMS (in women), occasional irritable bowels, fatigue and brain fog. There are many more symptoms that exist but I gave you just a few examples.

What is going on when we eat wheat?

Wheat contains several anti-nutrients. Anti-nutrients are substances that disrupt and interfere with proper nutrient absorption in the bowel. The three main anti-nutrients in wheat are Lectins, Gluten and Phytates. I will go through each of these anti-nutrients one by one and briefly explain what happens when each of these anti-nutrients enter our body.

First, there are lectins. Lectins are a plants built-in pesticide attempting to kill off anything that wants to consume it. Wheat lectins are called wheat germ agglutinin (WGA). Now this WGA in wheat seeds do not kill people outright but what they do in the long run will make people ill. Lectins are not broken down in a person’s gastro-intestinal tract. Instead, they bind to the receptors in the person’s intestinal wall. This binding allows the lectins and undigested food particles to leech into that person’s blood stream. This is called the “leaky gut syndrome”.

When undigested food particles enter a person’s blood stream, the persons immune system gets alerted that there is a foreign substance that should not be there and mounts an attack against the foreigner. It has been suggested that this same process may be the genesis of many auto-immune disorders that plague people today. Auto-immune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, graves’ disease, psoriasis, type 1 diabetes, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis and lupus are just to name a few that studies are pointing to the leaky gut syndrome as a trigger.

WGA also blocks the hormone leptin. Leptin shuts off a person’s appetite when their stomach is full. If the hormone is blocked, a person will eat more than they should at a meal resulting in weight gain.

Next, there is gluten. Gluten is the protein portion in the wheat. Actually, gluten is made up of two separate proteins, gliadin and glutenin. Gliadin is the biggest culprit in causing the heath issues caused by wheat. It is the trigger for Celiac disease. Gliadin also increases a person’s appetite and studies have demonstrated that there is a consistent increase of 400 calories per day (mostly in the form of carbohydrate consumption) when a person consumes wheat containing gliadin. As a result, gliadin contributes to a person’s unwanted weight gain.

Lastly, I will talk about Phytates. Phytic acid (phytates) is a storage form of phosphorus in wheat. Phytates robs a person of their ability to utilize the vitamins and minerals that are present in the food they eat. This causes nutritional deficiencies which leads to illness.
